Forms in React
- React uses the concept of 'controlled components' for forms
- These components send any changes through the React State
onChange
- This ensures that React always 'owns' the state of the Form
class NameForm extends React.Component {
constructor(props) {
super(props);
this.state = {value: ''};
this.handleChange = this.handleChange.bind(this);
this.handleSubmit = this.handleSubmit.bind(this);
}
handleChange (event) {
this.setState({value: event.target.value});
}
handleSubmit (event) {
alert('A name was submitted: ' + this.state.value);
event.preventDefault();
doSomethingWithEvent(event);
}
render() {
return (
<form onSubmit={this.handleSubmit}>
<label>
Name:
<input type="text" value={this.state.value} onChange={this.handleChange} />
</label>
<input type="submit" value="Submit" />
</form>
);
}
}
Forms - Textarea
- Textarea input elements usually derive their state from the child text
- React has Textarea inputs use a
value
attribute instead to be more likeinput
andselect
inputs
class EssayForm extends React.Component {
constructor(props) {
super(props);
this.state = {
value: 'Please write an essay about your favorite DOM element.'
};
this.handleChange = this.handleChange.bind(this);
this.handleSubmit = this.handleSubmit.bind(this);
}
handleChange(event) {
this.setState({value: event.target.value});
}
handleSubmit(event) {
alert('An essay was submitted: ' + this.state.value);
event.preventDefault();
}
render() {
return (
<form onSubmit={this.handleSubmit}>
<label>
Essay:
<textarea value={this.state.value} onChange={this.handleChange} />
</label>
<input type="submit" value="Submit" />
</form>
);
}
}
Forms - Select
- React uses
value
instead ofselected
to determine the selected item - This makes select forms more conformant to other form input types
class FlavorForm extends React.Component {
constructor(props) {
super(props);
this.state = {value: 'coconut'};
this.handleChange = this.handleChange.bind(this);
this.handleSubmit = this.handleSubmit.bind(this);
}
handleChange(event) {
this.setState({value: event.target.value});
}
handleSubmit(event) {
alert('Your favorite flavor is: ' + this.state.value);
event.preventDefault();
}
render() {
return (
<form onSubmit={this.handleSubmit}>
<label>
Pick your favorite flavor:
<select value={this.state.value} onChange={this.handleChange}>
<option value="grapefruit">Grapefruit</option>
<option value="lime">Lime</option>
<option value="coconut">Coconut</option>
<option value="mango">Mango</option>
</select>
</label>
<input type="submit" value="Submit" />
</form>
);
}
}
Forms - Switch Handling By Name
- Handling input from many input elements can be done using the
name
attribute - Use an
if(); else if (); else
or aswitch
statement to change behavior based on the type or name of the input element
class Reservation extends React.Component {
constructor(props) {
super(props);
this.state = {
isGoing: true,
numberOfGuests: 2
};
this.handleInputChange = this.handleInputChange.bind(this);
}
handleInputChange(event) {
const target = event.target;
const value = target.type === 'checkbox' ? target.checked : target.value;
const name = target.name;
this.setState({
[name]: value
});
}
render() {
return (
<form>
<label>
Is going:
<input
name="isGoing"
type="checkbox"
checked={this.state.isGoing}
onChange={this.handleInputChange} />
</label>
<br />
<label>
Number of guests:
<input
name="numberOfGuests"
type="number"
value={this.state.numberOfGuests}
onChange={this.handleInputChange} />
</label>
</form>
);
}
}
Lab: Say My Name!
Remember when we made a webpage that greeted users by a name entered in an HTML form? (It was several weeks ago so I don't blame you if you don't) Let's do that again, but this time with React!
- Create a page containin a form, and a display area
- When a user enters their name in the form, and hits "submit"
- The page greets the user by the name they entered
